Xanthos the capital of Lycia was established in 1200BC. Heredot writes about the fight between the Persian commander Hergapos and the Lycians in 545BC. During the Roman Empire in 42 BC the Romans and Brutus conquered Xanthos but the people burned their city and died. The Romans re- built the theatre, the church and the city gate are amongst the ancient ruins.
